Solar Pump Drives (VFDs)

A solar pump drive (VFD) runs a water pump directly from solar panels, with no batteries. It adjusts the motor speed to the sunlight available, so the pump keeps working through the day and starts and stops smoothly. For farms and water supply, it can cut diesel and grid costs during daylight pumping hours.

Sizing a solar pump system

• Match the drive rating to your pump motor (kW/HP) and its voltage.
• Size the solar panel array to feed the drive, usually with extra capacity for cloudy hours.
• Plan cabling and protection for the distance between array, drive and pump.
